Leonard Harry Roberts, Age 22

Leonard had been born in Dawley, being the son of Harry & Catherine Roberts, they lived at 15 Chapel Street, Dawley according to the 1911 census, Leonard’s dad Harry is listed as a baker, however at the time of his enlistment the family was living at 7 Station Road, Madeley. Harry, Leonard’s father passed away aged 50 in 1919.

The RGA were the heavy artillery of the British army and tended to operate in more fixed positions than the RFA who operated lighter calibre guns and hence could move at shorter notice when called upon. Leonard was wounded in action and had been bought back to a base hospital on the French coast before he succumbed to his wounds on the 1st April 1918.

He lies buried in Etaples Military cemetery in grave XXXII.A. 10
